Electives are coming back to Venable!
We are excited to announce that we are bringing back our 4th Grade Electives for another year! Our 4th Graders this year had a wonderful set of experiences that were made possible by our great parents here at Venable. If you are interested in leading an elective this year, please click the 4th Grade Electives Tab at the top of this page to learn more!
1st Grade Quest Identification
As we enter the 4th Quarter of this year, we begin our annual city-wide Quest Identification for students at the end of 1st Grade. During this process we collect data (from testing, parent and teacher evaluations, Quest ID Activities, and student work) that the Quest Identification Committee will use to evaluate whether or not a student will be identified for Quest. If you have received a letter asking for a parent evaluation to be filled out, please get it back to me at your earliest convenience. If you have not received a letter, but would like to nominate your child for the Quest Identification, please contact me at your earliest convenience and I will send you the necessary paperwork to get the ball rolling on the process.
You will also be receiving a purple flyer this week explaining the Quest Identification procedure and what data we collect on each child.

2nd Grade News
In 2nd Grade we continue to expand our critical thinking about poetry and fables using the Jacob’s Ladder Program. This is a program that was developed at William & Mary to promote higher levels of thinking about texts. It does this by using different “ladders” of thinking that start with simple thinking about a piece of writing and that students than “climb” to higher and higher levels of understanding.
It has been wonderful to see the students learn to use this system and develop higher critical thinking skills about all of the reading that they are doing this year. Be sure to look for more of these coming home soon!

3rd and 4th Grade News
This time of year in 3rd and 4th Grade we transition from the whole class Quest activities we have been doing all year to more specific teaching based on areas of needs for all students. During this time students will be placed in classrooms with students that have the same learning needs, and can change depending on the subject area and the content being learned. Quest will play a role in this by helping with students who have either mastered a subject, or are gaining a concept quicker than their peers, by providing higher level extensions and advanced curriculum.
This will seen in a variety of ways, but will be implemented by both Mr. Webb and Ms. Summers, so that we can meet the needs of as many students as possible. If you have any questions about this, please do not hesitate to contact Mr. Webb using the information below.
